Shaka's Rock sits between Ballito and Salt Rock on KwaZulu-Natal's Dolphin Coast, about 40 km north of Durban and around 20 minutes from King Shaka International Airport. It's a small, quiet village with a lot of coastline: rocky headlands, a sheltered tidal pool and a sandy main beach, with Ballito's shops and restaurants a few minutes' drive away. Our self-catering holiday homes here put you close to the water without the bustle.

The tidal pool is the heart of Shaka's Rock. Protected by the reef, its clear, shallow water makes it one of the best snorkelling spots on the coast, and reef fish like parrotfish come right up to the edges. It's also a calm place for children to paddle while the waves break further out.
The main beach is backed by cliffs and low reefs and is popular for swimming, bodyboarding and surfing, and ski-boats launch from here too. At low tide you can walk the rocky shoreline south towards Ballito. Check the tide times before you set off, because parts of the route close when the tide comes in.
The village takes its name from King Shaka, founder of the Zulu Kingdom. Local tradition holds that the headland overlooking the ocean was one of his lookout points. Today it's simply the best seat in the village: dolphins pass year-round, and humpback whales move up the coast during their winter migration, roughly June to November.
Shaka's Rock is mostly holiday apartments and secure complexes rather than hotels or malls, which keeps it quiet. We look after homes in two of its best-known complexes:
There are a couple of cafés near the tidal pool for coffee or breakfast after a swim. For more restaurants, groceries and shopping, Ballito is about five minutes away by car, and Salt Rock, with its famous Granny's Pool, is a couple of kilometres north. A car makes life easier here, but the beach and tidal pool are on your doorstep.
About 20 minutes by car, and around 40 minutes from Durban.
Yes. The tidal pool is sheltered and shallow, the village is quiet, and most of our homes are in secure complexes with pools.
Any time of year. Winter (June to August) is dry with warm days and is whale season. Summer is hot and humid, and the December school holidays are the busiest time, so book early.
For shopping and restaurants, yes, since Ballito is the nearest town centre. For the beach and tidal pool, you can walk.
