Salt Rock
Salt Rock is a small, easy-going seaside village about 7 km north of Ballito on KwaZulu-Natal's Dolphin Coast, around 40 minutes from Durban. It has a lifeguarded main beach, one of the best family tidal pools on the coast, and reefs just offshore, with Ballito's restaurants and shops a short drive away. It's the kind of place families come back to year after year.
Granny's Pool and the main beach
Salt Rock's main beach is the centre of village life. Lifeguards are on duty in season, shark nets make it safe for swimming, and it's a popular surf spot. At one end is Granny's Pool, a large tidal pool first built for guests of the old Salt Rock Hotel. It's calm and shallow, roughly waist-deep on an adult at its deepest, so it's a favourite with young children while the waves break on the rocks beyond.
The reefs off Salt Rock are rich with marine life, which makes the area popular for snorkelling, diving and fishing. Walk north and you reach Sheffield Beach, with sheltered coves and rock pools full of anemones and small fish that can keep children busy for hours.
A village with a story
Salt Rock's name goes back to the time of King Shaka, when salt was gathered from the rocks here at low tide. The village as it is today owes much to Basil and Gwen Hulett, who opened the Salt Rock Hotel and went on to develop the town around it.
Where to stay
Our Salt Rock home is Shore Break, within walking distance of the main beach and Granny's Pool, with sea views from the balcony. If it's booked for your dates, we have ten more self-catering homes a couple of kilometres south in Shaka's Rock, in the Chaka's Rock Chalets and Chaka's Cove complexes.
Shops and getting around
Salt Rock has its own shopping centres for groceries and everyday needs, and Ballito is about ten minutes away for more restaurants and shopping. You'll want a car for exploring, but the beach and Granny's Pool are the reason to stay put.
