St Lucia is a small town on the edge of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, South Africa's first UNESCO World Heritage Site, about three hours north of Durban. It's unlike anywhere else on the coast: hippos graze the town's verges at night, crocodiles bask along the estuary, and wild beaches and game reserves are a short drive away.

The St Lucia estuary is home to large numbers of hippos and crocodiles, and a boat cruise on the estuary is the best way to see them up close. Beyond the town, iSimangaliso stretches up the coast with lakes, wetlands, coastal forest and some of the most beautiful beaches in the country. Cape Vidal, inside the park, is a favourite for swimming, snorkelling and whale watching.
Hippos often walk through St Lucia after dark, so take care when out at night and keep your distance. Between June and November, humpback whales pass close to shore, and whale-watching boat trips run from town. The Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park, famous for its rhino, is about an hour's drive away for a day on safari.
Our two St Lucia homes are in The Bridge complex:
Both are self-catering, so you can come and go on your own schedule between boat trips and game drives.
You'll need a car. St Lucia's main street has restaurants, shops and tour operators, and iSimangaliso's gate is just outside town.
About three hours by car, heading north on the N2.
Yes, with care. Hippos roam at night, so don't walk in the dark near the estuary or on unlit verges, and never approach them.
Any time. Winter (June to August) is mild and dry and is whale season. Summer is hot and green, with great birdlife.
