Zinkwazi

Zinkwazi

Zinkwazi is a small, unspoilt holiday village on the far north of the Dolphin Coast, about 30 minutes beyond Ballito and around 40 minutes from King Shaka International Airport. With fewer than a thousand residents, a guarded entrance, a long lagoon and kilometres of quiet beach, it's the place to go when you want to properly switch off.

The beach and the lagoon

Zinkwazi has about 3 km of sandy beaches. The Main Beach has lifeguards and shark nets for safe swimming, and at low tide families explore the rock pools dotted along the shore. The point break draws surfers, and the reefs are popular with divers and spearfishers.

Winding inland from the Main Beach is the lagoon, about 7 km long between the sugar cane fields. It's perfect for paddling, kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding.

Birds, whales and wildlife

Zinkwazi sits in a protected conservancy, and the birdlife is exceptional. Fish eagles are a regular sight over the lagoon, and hundreds of species have been recorded here. Whales pass close to shore between roughly May and November, often with calves, and dolphins are seen year-round.

Where to stay

Our Zinkwazi home is Theunieskraal, a six-bedroom luxury villa in the secure Nkwazi Ridge Estate, on a ridge above the village with sea views. It sleeps up to twelve, four of the bedrooms are en-suite, and solar power means no load shedding. Guests also have use of the estate's pool, tennis courts and clubhouse, close to the lagoon. It's ideal for a big family or two families holidaying together.

Getting around

The village is reached by a tarred road off the N2, through a guarded security checkpoint. There's a ski-boat club with a pub and a beachside pizza spot. For bigger shopping, Ballito is about 30 minutes south, and Prince's Grant golf estate is around 20 minutes away.
